Chapter 3: Curriculum and Credits

Article 6: Credit Requirements

Ph.D. students must complete at least 30 credits, including courses in four major categories: required courses, core research topics, methodology, and other designated subjects. Of these, at least 21 credits must be from courses offered by the College. (Refer to the Ph.D. program course list for details.)

Ph.D. students must complete all required courses within the first academic year after enrollment, except for those taking remedial or retake courses.

Credits earned from courses co-listed for master's and doctoral students will not be counted toward graduation requirements. Courses from the master's program, language courses, or courses offered outside the institute require approval from the administrative advisor (or dissertation advisor) and the program director. Approval must be obtained before the course add/drop deadline of the respective semester for the credits to be counted toward graduation. Before a Ph.D. student has confirmed their dissertation advisor, course selection must be approved by the administrative advisor designated by the Ph.D. program director.

Article 7: Credit Exemption

1. Newly admitted students may apply for credit exemption at the beginning of their second academic year, following the university’s exemption schedule for that year. Exemptions for required courses may be processed earlier upon enrollment, subject to approval by the office.

2. Credit exemption shall be granted based on the following principles:

    (1) The course must be at the doctoral level.

    (2) The course must have been completed within the past five years.

    (3) The course title must be identical or similar, with equivalent content.

    (4) The course must be relevant to the student’s research interests and

         deemed necessary.

    (5) For courses co-listed for master's and doctoral students, the instructor

must impose higher academic requirements on doctoral students.

    (6) The course must not have been counted toward the graduation

         requirements of another awarded degree.

    (7) The maximum number of exemptible credits is six.

3. Applicants must submit a transcript, course syllabus, and other relevant documents for review and approval by the administrative advisor and the program director.

4. For credit transfer of courses taken during overseas exchange programs, refer to the university’s academic grading policies.

Article 8: Prerequisite Courses

Ph.D. students must complete the following prerequisite courses before enrolling in the required courses "Advanced Communication Theory" and "Research Methodology":

1. Advanced Communication Theory: Must first complete any theory-related course offered by the College.

2.Research Methodology: Must first complete any methodology-related course offered by the College.

Prerequisite courses cannot be counted toward graduation credits.

Prerequisite courses cannot be taken in the same semester as the corresponding required courses.

Exemptions from prerequisite courses may be processed before enrollment, subject to approval by the office.

Article 9: Credit Load per Semester

During the first two academic years, Ph.D. students must enroll in a minimum of 6 credits and a maximum of 12 credits per semester (including prerequisite course credits). However, students who have already fulfilled their credit requirements are exempt from this restriction.
